Suebarker's Moblog

Bouverie Road West

Barker's was owned by my father Herbert and his sister Amy (Sinden) from the mid 1920s until 1976. It was a tobacconists and confectioners in the old traditional way, and this photograph is of a special display in the shop windows.

Jumper (dcollins@electec.ac.nz) says:

If this is the shop I think it is (On the south side of Bouvrie Rd West close to Castle Hill Ave) then I used to visit this shop quite regularly for sweets in the mid 60's.

I would catch the bus from Sandgate (bottom of Brewers Hill) to the bottom of Castle Hill Ave and then walk up it, past the railway station and across Radnor Park on my way to school (at Stella Maris RC Primary school down near the fire station).

I was supposed to catch the bus all the way to Pavilion Rd / Black Bull Rd, but if I only got the bus to Castle Hill Ave I had money saved from busfares to spend in the shop on sweets (Peanut Brittle from the bottle stored on the middle shelf - just to the right of centre on the shelf !!). :)

Of course - having got off the bus early AND detoured to get sweets, I'd have to run most of the way so I wasn't TOO late for school !

After getting away with this for about 3 years, the school and Mr Bye (the headmaster), and Mum & Dad put paid to my secret sweet fund by making me get off the bus at the top of Sandgate Hill where I then got picked up by the school minibus... :(
