- Bouverie Road West
If this is the shop I think it is (On the south side of Bouvrie Rd West close to Castle Hill Ave) then I used to visit this shop quite regularly for sweets in the mid 60's.
I would catch the bus from Sandgate (bottom of Brewers Hill) to the bottom of Castle Hill Ave and then walk up it, past the railway station and across Radnor Park on my way to school (at Stella Maris RC Primary school down near the fire station).
I was supposed to catch the bus all the way to Pavilion Rd / Black Bull Rd, but if I only got the bus to Castle Hill Ave I had money saved from busfares to spend in the shop on sweets (Peanut Brittle from the bottle stored on the middle shelf - just to the right of centre on the shelf !!). :)
Of course - having got off the bus early AND detoured to get sweets, I'd have to run most of the way so I wasn't TOO late for school !
After getting away with this for about 3 years, the school and Mr Bye (the headmaster), and Mum & Dad put paid to my secret sweet fund by making me get off the bus at the top of Sandgate Hill where I then got picked up by the school minibus... :( by Jumper 23:58

This is my great grandfather Charles Thomas George Elgar known locally as China (due to the fact he sold bric a brac from a wheelbarrow) coming out of the family home 131 Hill Road. Most likely to have been taken in late 1960's early 70's.

I used to ride my bike down the overgrown area on the right of this photo.. and skid around the corner (occasionally falling off!!).
If I was really daring I'd ride down - jump straight off the end and continue down the hill to the phone box.
Back in 1964 (?) the phone was one of the old "Press button A - Press button B" as well as the dial. - I remember once pressing button B and some money came out. I thought it was a magic phone !! - turned out someone didn't press the button to get back any unused coins...
Last time I was there (2001) I spent many a happy evening inside the Brewers Arms - a change from being chased off by the landlady with a broom !!! by Jumper 12:27

If you turned your camera towards Sandgate from this spot you would see my old house in Wellington Place. (My Dad used to own the left-hand half of the big white house on the corner of Wellington Place viewable from the seafront when you look up the hill.) There used to be another 3-story house alongside ours which had a fantastic grape vine growing in the back garden - now has 3 houses on the same site. by Jumper 12:18
